Identifying Post Scabies Conditions

Posted by · Leave a Comment

Scabies is a form of skin irritation caused by microscopic mites burrowing inside the skin and laying their eggs. This is a common skin condition that affects millions of people every year, the victims are often orphan children living in adoption centers and elderly people. This skin condition is commonly passed on via direct skin contact, which it is most prevalent in places where people are closely packed in together, like orphanages and senior centers. Though treatable, scabies can and often re-occur, in fact even after treating scabies there are still some minor irritation that will still arise, these are known as post scabies conditions.

To help you identify whether or not you have post scabies conditions, here is a list of some of the most common symptoms and several treatment options you can try:

Slight Skin Inflammation and Itchiness

Post scabies often mimics scabies in its symptoms, most common of which is the re-emergence of the itchy bumps on the skin. This is because even after getting treated for scabies, the bodies of the dead mites are still embedded under your skin, and they will take a couple of weeks before they will decompose completely. If you get itchy bumps or rashes a week or so after getting treated for scabies, it may just be your body reacting to the decomposing mites. The only thing you can do for now is to use a moisturizing skin lotion to help with the itchiness and hopefully the bumps will subside in a few days.

Skin Infections

Infections often occur when you chose to treat scabies using pesticides to kill the parasitic mites. The most common reaction to the pesticides is dermatitis but there are some times when severe itching and painful welts appear on the skin, if this happens you should immediately consult with your doctor or dermatologist for viable treatment options.

Reoccurrence of Scabies

If you have already gotten treatment for scabies but the itchy bumps characteristic of the skin condition does not disappear after 3 to 4 days then you might have gotten re-infested with mites. If this happens you should consult with your doctor and maybe consider a stronger type of scabies treatment to fully get rid of the problem.

Post scabies conditions often mimic the original disease in its symptoms, albeit in a smaller scale. This is why you should not immediately assume that you are re-infested with scabies mites after you have been treated, you may only be experiencing the conditions associated with the treatment.
